You press the button and nothing happens, or the door starts to move and stops. A garage door that will not open or close is frustrating, and sometimes a sign of a problem that needs a professional. Here are the most common reasons a garage door stops working, and what you can do about each one.
1. A Broken Spring
If you heard a loud bang and now the door will not lift, a broken spring is the most likely cause. The springs counterbalance the door’s weight, and without them the opener cannot do the job. This is not a DIY fix. See our garage door spring repair service.
2. A Dead or Faulty Opener
If the motor is silent, check that the opener has power and that the wall button works. If the motor runs but the door does not move, the trolley may be disconnected or a gear may be stripped. Our garage door opener repair team can diagnose it quickly.
3. Misaligned Safety Sensors
If the door closes part way and then reverses, the photo-eye sensors near the floor are usually the culprit. Make sure nothing is blocking them and that they are clean and pointing at each other. A blinking sensor light means they are out of alignment.
4. A Dead Remote or Keypad
Before assuming the worst, try replacing the remote battery or using the wall button. If the wall button works but the remote does not, the remote may need reprogramming or replacing.
5. A Broken Cable
The lift cables work alongside the springs. A frayed or snapped cable can cause the door to hang crooked or stop moving. Like springs, cables are under tension and should be handled by a technician.
6. The Door Is Off Track
If the rollers have come out of the track, the door can jam or sit unevenly. Do not force it, as forcing an off-track door can cause more damage or injury. This calls for a professional garage door repair visit.
7. It Is Locked or in Manual Mode
Sometimes the fix is simple. Check that the door is not manually locked and that the opener is not in vacation or lock mode. If the emergency release cord was pulled, the door may be disconnected from the opener.
8. A Power or Setting Issue
A tripped breaker, an unplugged opener, or travel and force limits that have drifted out of adjustment can all stop a door. If the door reverses before it reaches the floor, the limit settings likely need fine-tuning.
When to Call a Professional
You can safely check the remote battery, the power, and whether the sensors are blocked. But anything involving springs, cables, or an off-track door should be left to a trained technician, both for your safety and to avoid further damage. If your door still will not budge, we offer same-day service and carry common parts on the truck.
